Packing light for the mountains

The 30-litre layering system we use for Spiti, Manali and Kashmir, plus the small things worth carrying.

Packing light for the mountains

Mountain weather changes by the hour, so packing well is about layers, not volume. Everything here fits in a 30-litre bag plus a daypack.

The layer system

  • Base: two merino or synthetic thermals
  • Mid: one fleece, one light down jacket
  • Shell: a waterproof, windproof jacket
  • Legs: one trek pant, one thermal legging
If you are packing a “just in case” outfit, you are packing for the wrong trip.

Small things that matter

Sunglasses with UV protection, a buff, a headlamp, a power bank and a basic medical kit. Everything else can usually be bought on the road.
